Credit Cards

Please clarify the following issue as it has numerous halachic implications.

When using a credit card to buy a product. Is the buyer entering into a financial obligation to the store with the credit card company taking responsibility for that obligation. Or is the obligation to pay for the product a direct obligation from the credit card company to the store.
